The Trip Begins

Well, I'm off! Sort of. This morning, my mother and I dragged our 3-hours-rested selves out of Baltimore and took a reasonably traffic-free sojourn through DC to Reagan National Airport. And despite my reputation for unpunctuality, I arrived at 8:30am.

The beauty of such an early arrival manifests in the complete lack of security lines. And I've already learned my first lesson: that of fitting my messenger bag into my disposable bag, in which I had items only intended for the flight, so as to meet with the flight regulations.

So why did I get only 3 hours of sleep, you may ask? Because apparently, even if you are ridiculously, near-embarrassingly organized, you can still find yourself taking care of odds and ends at the last minute. Such as taking pictures, like the one below, of everything you are taking on the trip for insurance purposes.

Yes, that's everything that fits into my main bag. (I also have a small messenger bag.) Even stranger is seeing everything else you own stuffed into a 5x10 storage space, which I also stopped by yesterday to finish filling. And I filled that sucker to capacity, as you can see:

But why do I have time to tell you of these victories in packing? Because my flight to Miami was oversold, and I was offered a $300 flight voucher to take the next flight, which still gets me into Miami in time for my connecting flight to Lima. Hell yes. So that will take care of most of the cost of my eventual trip home. I had better to find some wood on which to knock before I get a swift bad-luck kick in the ass to compensate for how smoothly things have been going throughout my preparations. Keep your fingers crossed that my auspicious beginning yields even better results.
